The Emancipation Oak is reminiscent of the Spanish Oak tree where enslaved people gather to hear the incredible words, "you are now free". The massive and impressive Spanish Oak trees are all over the Lowcountry and receive their charm from the Spanish Moss that drips from the branches. In Gullah culture, the moss is believed to have medicinal properties and has been placed in the sole of one's shoes to reduce blood pressure.
