Historic Penn Center

Named in honor of Pennsylvania Quaker William Penn, the Penn Center was founded in September 1862 as the first and eventually the largest school created for Sea Islander during the Port Royal Experiment to educate former slaves.

As the Port Royal experiment faded in popularity, Penn Center continued to be an influential source of education for Gullah from the surrounding areas. Upper school and technical skills training was the core of its service to the community as well as being a central location during the civil rights era. Martin Luther King Jr. spend a significant amount of time, on the grounds and wrote several of his famous speeches there.

Mitchelville had an organizational structure with elected officials, retail stores and the first compulsory education in the state, where the former slaves were able to farm, vote and work for wages.
