Freedom Day | Exploring the Families of Historic Mitchelville is an epic documentary that explores the journey to freedom through the stories and conversations of the descendants of the way makers in Mitchelville. On this journey, you will meet the Aiken, Brown, Burke, Jones, and Lawyer families that have called Hilton Head Island for nearly 200 years. Being an annual visitor to Hilton Head Island yearly since 1997 I find the history of the Gullah culture and low country very interesting. Thank you!

I’m glad that you enjoyed it! Where are you coming from?

I think that I have Gullah roots. My Mom received a grass mat from her Gr. Aunt that looks like one from the Gullah culture. Also, part of my Maternal Family came from So. Carolina on the Felder Plantation. I would like to know more about the Gullah Culture.

Thanks for your email. It’s nice to have something to identify with, isn’t it? For the most part, the Gullah come from Jacksonville FL to Jacksonville NC and 35 miles inland from the coast. I’m not sure where the Felder plantation is, but if it is within those boundaries, then yes you are. On the site, search for the Gullah Geechee Corridor, a map can be found there. There are also several articles on the language, religion and culture that you can search on the site. Enjoy!
